Chapter 7

Parker

It’s a decisive 2-1 win against Culver, and the locker room is full of life and excitement. Wins are amazing, but wins against Culver are out of this world.

The rivalry is still alive and well, and any win over them is a major boost to the team’s morale. We’ve been a bit inconsistent so far, so I’m hoping this win will get everyone back in gear. The beginning of the season is always rough. It usually takes a few weeks for the guys to start gelling back together, so I’m not worried.

Icing my shoulders, I rotate it a little, making sure I still have my range of motion there. It’s not too bad. There’s a twinge of pain, yeah, but it feels more like a bruise versus something broken. That guy was on me the whole game—I’m not surprised he went for the hit. Still, fuck him and fuck Culver. I’m glad I got the winning goal.

Eli had been cheering for me. I loved seeing him on the stands, and I especially loved seeing him get into the game.

“Nice goal there, Captain,” Sazzy calls out from the other side of the locker room. He throws a roll of tape at me. “Don’t get a big head now, though, eh?”

Laughing, I throw the roll of tape back. “Don’t worry, I don’t think I could get a bigger head than you,” I shoot back. “Good playing though, Saz, you were like a fucking wall back there.”

“A wall with a tiny hole, maybe, they did get in that one goal,” Sazzy says self-deprecatingly. He’s smiling, though, and I know that he’s proud of his showing today.

Rummaging through my bag, I unlock my phone. We’re going to get Korean BBQ in a few, you down? I text Eli. He’s probably still with Nathan, so I imagine Nathan’s told him about the team’s tradition. Still, I want to make sure Eli knows he’s invited.

My phone pings a moment after. I’m down, if the guys don’t mind, Eli replies.

Not at all. It’s not a strict team-only thing anyway, the guys’ partners are usually there. It’ll be fun, I text back, hoping to be reassuring.

I know the guys can be a little too much sometimes, but Eli had looked comfortable around them last time during movie night. The guys joked around, yeah, but Eli gave as good as he got. I want him to have fun around my guys, around my friends.

I’ll be there then. I think Nathan says we’ll meet you there? We’ll grab a bunch of seats, Eli says.

Perfect, thank you, I text back. Before thinking too much of it, I send him another text. Can’t wait to see you again.

Immediately, I regret sending it, but the feeling doesn’t last long when Eli replies right after. Same, see you there :).

With a guaranteed dumb grin on my face, I head to the showers, whistling. A win against Culver, more time with Eli—today’s already shaping up to be an excellent day.
